The Socio-Cultural and Economic Relevance of Graphic Art Hand-Printing Technique in Adinkra Cloth Production at Ntonso in Ghana

Abstract

Graphic art plays a significant role in the socio-cultural and economic development of many nations including Asantes, an ethnic group in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Artists at Ntonso use mainly graphic art hand-printing technique in the production of symbolic Adinkra cloths, which function significantly in the socio-cultural life of the people. This paper addresses the graphic art printing technique, types of tools and materials used to produce the Adinkra cloths at Ntonso, common printing problems as well as to establish the socio-cultural and economic relevance of this artistic technique in the cloth production. The qualitative research methodology was used to collect and synthesise data gathered.
