The Role of Microfinance in the Growth and Development of Small and Medium Scale Businesses in the Builsa Districts of Upper East Region, Ghana.

Abstract

All over the world microfinance has been identified as a catalyst that continues to play an important role in the growth and development of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMES). Unfortunately too little is being done to assist SMEs to obtain sufficient financial support for business start-ups and expansion in many developing countries (Asian Dev. Bank, 2007; Asiama & Osei, 2008). A mixed methods descriptive research design, which incorporates both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques, was adopted with special reference to SMEs in the Bulsa District. Hundred and fourteen respondents were chosen through a stratified simple random sampling technique, and made to react to a number of both negative and positively worded questions.
