Mobile Telecommunication usage and Socio- Economic Development in Ghana: A Case Study of Bamahu Community in the Wa Municipality

Abstract

The telecommunication industry over the last decades has proven not only as an emerging economic sector but a rapidly growing sector with an immense chain of impacts towards the revolution of the social and economic structures of Ghana. This has brought in its wake the introduction of several telecommunication companies competing for the available markets in the local economy. The paper sought to assess the implications of telecommunication usage for socio-economic development specifically in Bamahu community. The intent of writing the paper is to identify the networks within the study area, find out the market shares for each as well as assess the challenges that telecommunication presents to consumers and service providers. In doing so, a cross sectional survey case study of Bamahu community was undertaken. Purposive and accidental sampling methods were used for the study. The paper revealed that Vodafone had the highest number of subscribers among the sampled population. Again it was revealed that subscribers faced challenges such as high charges,
