Abstract

The performance of photovoltaic (PV) systems is constrained mainly by two physical quantities: irradiance and temperature. The irradiance depends on the position of the sun at any given time. To achieve optimum performance of PV installations, PV modules ought to be positioned appropriately to receive optimum irradiance. Also, at extremely high temperatures, the performance of the PV modules is negatively affected; hence there is also the need to cool PV modules in operation. This work designed and implemented a low-cost combined cooling and tracking solar PV system to improve the performance of a fixed-mounted PV module. The results obtained are compared to that of a fixed-mounted PV panel. The results showed that including a combined tracking and cooling system in the fixed PV installation improved its performance significantly in terms of power produced
