Performance appraisal system has been one of the reliable means of assessing the success or otherwise of any institution. The purpose of this piece was to assess the effectiveness of appraisal management as pertain in academic institution in general and Takoradi Technical University in particular. This research piece used content analysis and interviews as methodology to arrive at it findings and recommendations. The findings revealed that Takoradi Technical University still rely on Annual Confidential Report (ACR) system of appraisal which in modern time proved to not be reliable with it attended limitations such as appraiser’s biases towards the appraisee and lack of employee’s participation in the appraisal processes. It emerged from the research that Takoradi Technical University conducts performance appraisal for its staff only when the latter applies for promotion to a higher grade. In conclusion, in order for Takoradi Technical University to be an institution, which sees its employees, as most valued asset would have to develop a keen interest in the way and manner performance appraisal, is conducted to the admiration of all employees. It is recommended that Takoradi Technical University should adapt modern appraisal system that sought to create a platform where both the appraiser and the appraisee would get opportunity to review the outcome of the appraisal process. The rotational system of appointment of heads of department requires that periodic training on performance management be organised periodically.
