Abstract

This study assessed whether a statistically significant difference exists between cooperative learning strategy and competitive strategy for preparing junior high school student for mathematical achievement. The study used a quasi-experimental research design and both pre-test and post-test were used as data collection instrument. The results showed students who were taught by the cooperative learning strategy had a better understanding of the content as compared to the students who were taught by competitive learning strategy (lecture method). Therefore, the conclusion of this study is that the cooperative learning had a positive impact on students’ academic performances in Tamale metropolis. Based on the findings, the study recommends that, Ghana education service should establish resource centres to provide teachers with specialised skills in cooperative learning styles, so that instruction on this type of learning is based on correct educational roots using precise scientific techniques.
