Effectiveness of Performance Appraisal System of Administrative Staff in Takoradi Technical University: Observations and Suggestions for the Way forward

Abstract

Performance appraisal system has been one of the reliable means of assessing the success or otherwise of any institution. The purpose of this piece was to assess the effectiveness of appraisal management as pertain in academic institution in general and Takoradi Technical University in particular. This research piece used content analysis and interviews as methodology to arrive at it findings and recommendations. The findings revealed that Takoradi Technical University still rely on Annual Confidential Report (ACR) system of appraisal which in modern time proved to not be reliable with it attended limitations such as appraiser’s biases towards the appraisee and lack of employee’s participation in the appraisal processes. It emerged from the research that Takoradi Technical University conducts performance appraisal for its staff only when the latter applies for promotion to a higher grade.
