Double Jeopardy, Young Women and Political Participation in Nigerian Politics

Abstract

Women’s participation in formal political structures and processes, where decisions regarding the use of societal resources generated by both men and women are made, remains insignificant. The main objective of the study, therefore, was to investigate the causes of low participation of young women in democracy in Nigeria since the return of democracy in 1999; to assess the challenges impeding young women’s participation in electoral politics and to recommend measures that will enhance young women’s participation in politics. In achieving this, the study utilized existing data. The study discovered that the major inhibiting factors remain cultural and traditional among other factors.
