Dominant Career Needs of Students: Implications for Career Guidance and Counselling

Abstract

The main objective of the study was to find out career needs of first year College of Technology Education students. One research question and hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. The study employed descriptive survey design. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the students. A sample of 263 students was used in the study.  Data were collected through the use of structured questionnaire. Cronbach Alpha was used to test for reliability of the questionnaire items and the co-efficient obtained was .87. Frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations were used to present the results of the study. Independent sample t-test was used to test for the significant difference between male and female students. The study revealed among others that learning about job opportunities was the dominant career needs of students. Significant difference was found to exist between male and female students career needs.
