Assessing the Effects of Public Transport Services on Commuters along Awoshie to Pokuase Road

Abstract

Public transport is considered to play a crucial role in development. Through its accessibility to urban and remote areas has promoted socio-economic development. However, it has had adverse implications on commuters. Commuters averse service quality of public transport such as, unavailable, unaffordable, unsafe, and uncomfortable buses have resulted in delay, high travel cost, pollution and in general, loss of productivity. The study examines and discusses the effects of public transport services on commuters and ways in addressing these challenges caused by these transport services along Awoshie to Pokuase road. For this purpose, a convenient random sample of 115 respondents were selected. Open ended and close ended questionnaires were administered to commuters whereas most drivers were interviewed. The empirical analysis shows that public transport is in a deplorable condition. The study also indicates that traffic congestion of 56.5% is the most issue commuters face daily during trip to workplace and school.
