A Review of Maintenance Culture of Public Buildings: the case of Getfund Hostel in Takoradi Technical University

Abstract

Maintenance of buildings in public institutions seems to be an issue of interest. The Getfund Hostel is fairly new amongst the hostels of residence in Takoradi Technical University, but the building is fast deteriorating with little attention to assuage the situation. Pious stated in Seley, (1987) that in the US, over 85% of public academic institutions lack maintenance  and this is confirmed by the National Center for Education, Statistics, (2000) which leaves much to be desired. The Getfund since it was handed over to the then Takoradi Polytechnic in 2008, has not seen any planned maintenance. The physical structure of the Hostel has gaping cracks at the joints of the concrete walls. The facial board of the entrance and the stairs leading to the Porters lodge is detaching from the building. The massive leakage from the roofing when it rains erodes the concrete and washes off the paint.
